Diwali is almost here - a festival of celebrations, get-togethers, colours, lights, gifts and sweets. You can see confectioners busy making loads of sweets during this festive season every year. They have lines of customers waiting at their shops to collect their sweets. And, what to say about the prices? The prices double or even triple up during these festivities! Instead of waiting in the lines and paying these heavy prices, you can opt for gifting other items to your loved ones this Diwali. Ninjacart offers a wide range of fresh fruits, chocolates, namkeens and beverages, which you can collectively place as a hamper and gift it among your friends and family.
There are huge varieties of sweets available in India all the year round including gulab jamun, kaju katli, phirni, nankhatai, sandesh, coconut laddoos and more, with 'pedas' being the most popular sweet among Indians. Not only during festivals but otherwise too, people when offering prasad to the deities at the temples, often consider buying pedas. This is one of the easiest and quickest sweets to make. You can even try making these at home. It doesn't require many ingredients, nor does it require a lot of time and effort. So, do you want to try making it yourself?
Here is the easiest recipe for you.
Preparation time - 1 minute before cooking and 5 minutes after cooking
Cooking time - 3 minutes
Yields - 12 to 14 pieces
(You will require a microwave oven for this recipe.)
- Condensed milk - 200 grams (Half can)
- Milk powder - 3/4 cup
- Ghee/butter - 1/2 tbsp
- Saffron - a pinch (optional)
- Nutmeg powder - a pinch (optional)
- Cardamom powder - 1/2 tsp (optional)
Mix the condensed milk, milk powder and ghee/butter well. Make sure there are no lumps. Then, place it in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave the mixture for one minute.
If you want some extra flavour and want to add a nice yellowish colour to your pedas, you can add the cardamom powder, nutmeg powder and saffron. Mix well and microwave again for one minute.
Remove and mix well. If you find the mixture too thin, you can microwave again for half a minute or a complete one minute, until it thickens. The right consistency is when the mixture starts leaving the sides of the bowl. Make sure the mixture doesn't start darkening in colour. If it does, you can be sure that you have overcooked it.
Let the mixture cool down till it is a little warm. You need to shape the mixture into balls with your hands. So, make sure the mixture has cooled good enough for you to touch but, don't let it cool completely or else, you won't be able to make the balls.
Apply some oil or ghee on your palms first because the mixture is too sticky and might stick to your plams, which would hinder the process of making good round balls. Take a very tiny portion of the mixture and shape it into a small ball. Similarly, make balls of the entire mixture. Your pedas are ready! Isn't it so simple?
You can let the pedas cool down completely and then enjoy them with your family. You can also refrigerate the pedas in an air tight box.
Note 1 - You can shape the pedas the way you want. You can also press in the centres and sprinkle some crushed pistachios, almonds or cashews into the centres for a rich look.
Note 2 - You can also cook the mixture on the stove in a pan if you don't have a microwave oven. It will take around 10-15 minutes to cook on the stove and you will be required to continuously stir the mixture until it starts to leave the sides of the pan.
So, try making these delicious pedas right away! If it turns out to be good, you can avoid buying the expensive and adulterated sweets at the confectioner's, and distribute your own home-made pedas to your friends and family this Diwali!
