February is the love month of the year! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! With just a few days left, all of you who love someone would be making plans on how to celebrate this special day with him or her. And what is a celebration without some surprises for the one you love?
If you are a girl or woman looking for ways to surprise your man – may it be your boyfriend or husband or anyone else – we have an idea. You know that a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, right? Why not bake him something special and nice? And, with Valentine’s being the day of love, why not make use of some red colour and hearts? How about heart-shaped tarts with some red coloured filling? Jam tarts are typical British teatime delicacies. Bake these tiny little short crust jam pastries and make your loved one say “Delicious!”
And for those of you who wish to bake special tarts for the one you love, here is a quick and easy recipe that you can add to your list of Valentine's Day recipes.
Ingredients (for around 15 jam tarts)
- Plain flour – 225 grams
- Butter – 115 grams (chilled and cubed)
- Cold water – 2 tbsp
- Raspberry/strawberry jam – 15 tsp
- Castor sugar – for sprinkling
Important equipment and appliances
- Plastic wrap
- Cutters (circle-shaped and heart-shaped)
- Oven and tart tray
Sieve the flour in a large bowl. Add the butter and rub it with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Mix in the water little by little and stir until the mixture reaches a texture when it can be rolled into balls. Wrap this pastry in a piece of plastic wrap and refrigerate for half an hour.
Heat the oven to 200 degree Celsius.
Sprinkle some flour on your rolling surface. Roll out the pastry with a rolling pin to about 1/4th cm thickness. Cut as many circles as you can from the rolled-out flour. Gather up the bits of pastry and roll again to make more circles. Make a total of 15 diskettes.
Take the remaining dough, gather it up and roll out again. Cut 15 heart shapes from it.
Grease the tart tray. Place the circles in it and prick them with a fork. Now, put the tray in the oven and bake for around 5 minutes, until the pastries turn pale golden. Take the diskettes out.
Put 1 heaped tsp of jam into each tart. Top each one with the heart shaped pastries. Put it back into the oven to bake for another 5 minutes or until the pastries reach your desired golden colour.
Let the pastries cool. Lift the tarts out of the tray and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Sprinkle them with castor sugar when ready to serve. Your delicious Valentine's jam tarts are ready!
