Shoppers Stop had last week said that it expects online shopping to play a major role in its sales. Govind Shrikhande, the Managing Director of Shoppers Stop, said that the partnership will be launched in the third quarter of this year, i.e. somewhere around the month of September. He says that the second quarter, from May to August has been a very passive one. But, the months from September to December will be active on account of the number of festivals that will come up. He also said that the online navigation system will see a makeover before Diwali.
The partnership with Snapdeal will be based on 'click, collect and ship from store' model, wherein customers ordering from the Shoppers Stop store on Snapdeal will be able to pick up the products or get them delivered from the nearest outlet of Shoppers Stop. This omni-channel project will be first launched in North India and will expand to other regions of the country over the next one year.
Govind Shrikhande also said, “Globally online retail contributes 9% of total retail sales and it is pretty strong in US, China and UK. However, India is lagging behind but that also leaves a huge scope for players like Shoppers Stop to cash in. Although out of today's $600 billion Indian retail, less than $4 billion is online but by 2020, it is expected to be anywhere between $50-60 billion. We believe that the growth rate in online is going to be pretty big and if we can be party to this growth I think that would be great. This deal will give us far superior traction in terms of number of visitors. We believe Snapdeal is thousand times bigger in terms of reaching customers.”
Kunal Bahl, the co-founder and CEO of Snapdeal said, “I feel that finally starting today there is a new beginning on how the lines between offline and online commerce are going to start blurring. For the end consumer the only thing that matters is great product, great price and great experience, and then it's up to companies like ours and Shoppers Stop to make sure that we deliver.
